A new Just Peace Committee has been created locally. We'll hold a forum as a launch in a Vancouver community center in early May.
Here is our description.
The Just Peace Committee is an anti-imperialist, anti-war committee that supports social justice and genuine and lasting peace.
Imperialism is the monopoly capitalist, global system ridden with conflicts owing to
(1)its deepening contradictions in the current stage of crisis,
(2)its aims of domination, exploitation and control,
(3)the extension of feudal and colonial relations with suppression of national liberation struggles, and
(4) the integration of militarism and war in its industrial-military complex.
With its chauvinist outlook, it is also patriarchal, class-based and Eurocentric, often inflaming sentiments and sowing divisions as part of its strategy.
As the tensions, militarization, arms-related trade, aggressions, and repression of political rights and civil liberties of this system are intensifying in this period, the Just Peace Committee aspires to contribute to exposing and confronting imperialism and militarization and wars of aggression, and building solidarity with this aim. This is an urgent necessity of our times.
Our work is two-fold, education in a multiplicity of ways and solidarity for liberation struggles and opposition to militarization and war. We are focusing our work on some major areas of conflict:
(1)the call for reunification and genuine and lasting peace in Korea,
(2)the imperialist military encirclement of Venezuela,
(3)the Palestinian struggle for liberation from occupation, and
(4)the calls to continue peace negotiations in the Philippines, support the resistance to state repression and militarization, and the demands of the people for justice.
