I had a great time on the group hike to Gaddeok Island today. It is in southwest Metro Busan, near the big New Port development. Despite the industry of the area, it is a little haven of natural beauty with many glorious views of the sea and coastline on a wonderful sunny day like today. We were relishing the sunshine without the intense humidity of the summer.
One of the Namsan group joined me to take the bus to the rendez-vous point in West Busan early this morning. We met a small group of the English speaking expat teachers, and a Korean hiking club. C led the way for the expats, while his best friend “uncle” (changweon) led the Korea group.
As usual, C promised an easier hike than he took us on. It was somewhat challenging because of the steep grades of the three peaks we climbed, and the steep grade from sea level up to the trails along the extensive cliff. Yes, we had quite a workout. However, we felt rewarded by being out in nature and by the spectacular views. We all wanted to lie down for awhile at the trail’s end, and there was shelter there in the form of a gazebo, plus a wooden platform with some shade where we could do that.
Though composed of some who were strangers to each other, the collection of hikers soon gelled. Everyone was friendly and genuinely interested. I made new friends and it was great to see C and "uncle" again.
C hasn't been out on a group hike for several months. I have been wondering how he has been fairing. I thought he might have been through another patch of crisis.
Yes, we should all sleep well tonight. I am sure the legs will feel tuckered out tomorrow, but the experience was invigorating to the mind and heart.
