Overall, my experience with self-publishing has so far been positive. With the advent of e-books and e-publishing services, I along with many other writers have been able to post and circulate our writings with ease while protecting our property. Compared with the elitist, corporate, expensive and slow process of paper book publishing, it is really liberating. We just would not have been published without e-book publishing technology and services. What is more, there are services available free of charge to the author.
My creative writing career got off the ground in 2008 and I was uploading my works for e-publishing by 2010. Though only a handful of sales have been transacted, my e-books have gotten some attention. A lot of downloads of samples of my publications for sale have been made. Also, my home university library has acquired and stored my writings published in the last two years. Some other library made a purchase as well. As for my books available for free, the one (Impressing Heaven) posted as of 2011 has been downloaded over 750 times. One review exists, but it awarded five stars. After posting my second novel, Ice Age, on a free e-book site only about a week ago, more than 100 downloads have already been done.
The blogging has been the most successful of my publishing endeavours. Since I started blogging on my personal career website, edwise2008.com, the number of views of my website have soared. Six years and eight months later, in fact, the site has received more than 26,500 views. When I started blogging on that site in late 2013, by contrast, my website had only had some 1,200 visits. This year alone, my blog has been seen over 8,500 times. In fact, one day a couple of weeks ago, daily visits to the blog reached 950 views. On several other days from 2013 to now, 400 to 600 views were recorded.
With the capacity to self-publish, I have been able to surpass my dreams as a writer. The opportunities and abilities to self-publish have brought me many benefits, though not financial rewards as yet. Nevertheless, self-publishing has been a very positive experience that has served to enrich my life.
