A Year of Living Positively-Day 340

I had a lot of energy today. I woke up around 5:30 in a mood to get things done. In fact, I got bored with being at home in the morning so I went to work early. There, I got a lot of marking and planning done. I also did a full, albeit a bit lighter, workout. I thought I might feel crappy by the time I taught the evening class at eight o’clock, but I was fine.
 
Having awakened very early in the day, I finally made that call to the Canada Council of the Arts. It turns out that I could have checked online any time. Also, it turns out that the deadline was October 1 this year rather than April 1. The news is that the application was not processed because it was categorized as ineligible. I could not get anyone in at the time I phoned to get an explanation, but I suppose it is because I am currently not a resident of Canada. Well, the option for applying for a writer’s grant will open up later, I am sure.
 
Teaching the writing class was very satisfying today. In contrast with the students of the conversation classes, who seem to be tired and bored and losing enthusiasm, the writing class students appear to be reaching a peak in their interest and production. That is marvelous. It is just as it should be. I realized this was happening when I checked their latest assignment and found that half the class had done excellent work. The assignment was to think of a social issue and find and summarize three news stories on that issue. Many found great topics and devoted some deep reflection to them with obvious sincere concern. Perfect!

The conversation class, on the other hand, has been performing at a lower level lately. Scores on their quizzes have dropped a little, apparently because they have not looked carefully enough at the questions. As for their most recent assignment, which was the construction and performance of a telephone conversation, the results have been disappointing, on the whole. They should know how to apply the text materials (grammatical patterns and vocabulary) to the making of dialogues. I guess many just did not put much effort into the job this time around. I know they might be tired of this kind of project, but I could not think of any other model for an assignment based on textbook work. They still seem to like me a lot, but are losing enthusiasm for the course.
