A Year of Living Positively-Day 322

I enjoyed a full day with good company and more accomplishments. I taught the two conversation classes and we were able to wrap up early. I have everything lined up for Monday. I enjoyed a pleasant lunch with Y. Tonight I am relaxing contentedly with wine.

Fortunately, I also obtained more work substituting for a colleague. A is on the national team that creates the annual scholastic exams for the Ministry of Education’s public school system. Every fall, the team is sequestered for three weeks in order to make the exams with minimal opportunity for leaks of exam information. It’s all hush-hush because of the extreme competitiveness built into the system. I’ve subbed for A before, and enjoyed teaching a course the presents an overview of modern music of the USA. This time, I am only available for teaching the general English and regular English conversation courses.

At least I already know the material for the regular course, which can lighten the workload. It does mean six extra hours of teaching a week up until the last week of classes for this term, and school year. I have 18 teaching hours already and it totals 24 with the subbing. It also makes some more money, some $600 a week additional income.

I also agreed to take on some subbing as a favour to the institute where our professional development organization meets each month. The owner has allowed us to use the space for free for many years. It is the oldest private institute (non-accredited academy) in the city and it has a great reputation. It would serve us well to comply with the company’s wishes to keep on good terms. I am to work two hours a morning for three weeks starting in the week of Christmas. That should bring in around a total of $1200 for that period.

I was hoping to get some extra winter work and had been intending to search for it. However, it walked right up to me—twice. I thus did not have to search. This income from subbing will make up for the absence of winter work on our campus. We used to get a lot of winter and summer work for overtime pay but those days are gone and it is harder to secure the extra seasonal work. That extra income has helped to cover wonderful vacations.

The weekend is looking up. There is a hike in the works. I’ll also have to see the KOTESOL gang for a local council meeting.
