Am feeling tired again this evening, though I snatched a few winks in the afternoon. I had to get up to take a shower, do my hair and dress up in good time to meet the class of civic employees at a program opening ceremony in the mid-morning. It was at the old campus. There were the usual speeches, and each instructor was asked to make a greeting of a few words.
Two of these students are familiar to me. I must have taught them in the regular evening "City Hall" classes before.
I taught one class to them today, later in the afternoon. After doing some errands, grabbing a bite out, then taking refuge back at my place, I had a nap and was on the verge of falling asleep again when I realized I would have to make a dash. I caught a bus in the nick of time for the 4:00 start time.
They're a quiet and polite group, but not without spunk and imagination. I think we'll get along fine. Since they had been introducing themselves all day, I used a fun technique to have them get acquainted and for me to get an idea of the personalities in the room, getting them to ask each other what kind of plant, marine creature or geographical feature they would be if they could. That took up a good 30 minutes. They I described my plan for the course, and they seem open to the menu of lectures and articles on global issues and developments. That's good. I had a short activity to wrap up the class time--a list of events on "this day in history." This kind of activity would not thrill a lot of students, but they seemed to enjoy it. Swell!
I feel as tired as if I had taught all day. I guess how it usually is for me on the first day of teaching a conversation class. Now I'm familiar with them, and the syllabus is agreeable to them, I can relax and sail along.
I just had a vegetable and shrimp stew with bean curd and some fresh French bread on the side. It was delicious and satisfying. Now for some Youtube video watching, then yoga.
